Roerich depicts an incident from the 11th-century Primary Chronicle (Povest’ vremennykh let) that told of a battle between Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich and the Circassian Prince Rededya, the leader of the Kasogi people. The picture was painted in 1943, during the Second World War.
