The campaign of Igor Svyatoslavovich of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsians in 1185, which formed the basis of The Tale of Igor’s Campaign (Slovo o polku Igoreve), a famous work of Ancient Russian literature, was used by Roerich when painting this picture in 1942, at the height of the Second World War.
