In 1906, Sergei Diaghilev invited Mikhail Larionov to contribute to his show at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. The artist’s visit to the French capital was extremely important for his subsequent career, as it was there that he became acquainted with Fauvism. But in the painting Garden, apart from Fauvism, Larionov found another source of in¬spiration. This source was his native Tiraspol, where the artist spent the summer period without exception, and where many of his new works came from. The lavish colours of this provincial southern town poured out of his canvases like a flowing stream in the early 1910s, the era to which Garden belongs.
