Zinaida Serebryakova in 1922 received permission to go behind the scenes at the Marinsky Theatre, and her art was enriched by new images. For three years she visited the dressing - rooms on performance days and drew a huge number of sketches of the ballerinas. This led to a large series of portraits which introduce us to the colourful world of the theatre. She depicts the final preparations of the ballerinas prior to the show. Some are checking themselves in the mirror, others are put ting on their costumes or doing their hair. The artist's exultant colours convey the beauty of the young dancers and the elegance of their costumes. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. St-Petersburg. 1999. P. 44.
