Roberto Montenegro Nervo (1886–1968) was a Mexican artist, later, the director of the Mexican Folk Art Museum and art critic. A native of the Guadalajara city began his art education at the early age in his hometown. Later he entered the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. In 1905 the Ministry of Education granted the young artist the opportunity to study in Europe, where he stayed until 1920. First in Paris, later - in Madrid that allowed him to establish close relationships with major artists and writers.
During that period the Mexican artist probably got acquainted with Alexander Yakovlev, who together with his friend Vasily Shukhaev after studying the old painting in Italy in 1913–1915, visited Spain and the Majorca island.
After his return to Mexico, Montenegro showed a great interest in folk art. He published a book "Mexican Painting" (1800–1860)», participated in the creation of frescoes in such important buildings as Saints Peter and Paul College, the Ministry of Education and others.
The painting was first shown at the exhibition "World of Art" in Petrograd in the end of 1915.
