Saul, the first king of Israel, wanted to know his fortune before an important military campaign. The Witch of Endor summoned the spirit of prophet Samuel, and he predicted a horrible death for the king and his sons, because Saul failed to fulfill God’s orders.
In 1857 Ge was awarded with a 1st class golden medal for this painting. He also received a title of a high-class artist and was sent on a trip abroad.
