The subject of this work was inspired by llya Repin’s Religious Procession in Kursk Province. Begun in 1893, the painting was never finished. The artist depicts a human procession consisting of different social classes. Pryanishnikov employs the devices of plein-air painting, interpreting the landscape in a generalised manner. The light scheme plays an important part in the spatial resolution of the composition.
