Cards attracted Rozanova as a unique model of the real world with its own rules and hierarchy. In her paintings and graphic art, cards sometimes appear as an expressive part of the objective world she so loved, sometimes as a principle of plastic construction, and sometimes as a source of images. Four Aces is a transition from the Playing Cards cycle, with its exaggerated representation of card figures, to the new Suprematist stage of her work.
The model is virtually detached from its prototype. The symbols of the four card suits have thus become independent forms endowed with their own energetics. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. St-Petersburg. 1999. P. 213.
