Julia Kun is a sculptor, disciple and follower of Stepan Erzia. In 1927, she went with him to Paris as an interpreter, and later to Buenos Aires. Being a disciple of Erzia she largely adopted the great sculptor’s manner while working under his. guidance with the Argentine wood.  But in 1931 she had to come back to the Soviet Union because of the struggle against left-wing movements that began in Argentina. This work is one of the few portraits by Stepan Erzia, depicting a certain person. Erzia created a strong-willed and strict image unlike to the other women's portraits. When processing the stone which he almost did not use in work in Argentina, Erzia applied to his favourite technique. He thoroughly polished the face and left the texture of the hair unfinished.

Kun Yulia (1896–1980) was a sculptor, Erzia’s follower and his close friend. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. She is an author of easel and monumental works. Her sculptural composition "Waterway" was set in 1937 – the year of the Moscow-Volga Canal (now the Moscow Canal) opening.
