Exhibition "Cosmism in Russian Art"

Paintings and drawings by Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Ivan Kudryashev, Mikhail Matyushin and other masters of abstract art will be shown next to the works of artists who remained within the framework of object forms, but chose the content of their art to be about the planet Earth or the Universe, consonant with new discoveries in science and philosophy.

Like genetics and other advanced areas of science, the ideas of cosmism, which had a strong influence on literature, music, and the visual arts at the beginning of the 20th century, have long been consigned to oblivion. Despite the fact that in recent decades plenty of books have been written about scientists and cosmist philosophers, numerous films are made and lectures are given, artists who were inspired by their ideas, are nowadays merely mentioned.

In the visual arts, the ideas of cosmism manifested themselves in different ways, often in the most unusual and unexpected forms. The exhibition in the Russian Museum will reveal very unexpected facets of the work of many artists, including such masters as Konstantin Yuon, Pavel Chelishchev, Natalia Goncharova. Visitors will be able to get acquainted with the statements of the artists, testifying to their passion for cosmism, as well as films dedicated to the exhibitors.

The exposition will bring together over 150 paintings and graphic works from the collection of the Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow, the Tver regional art gallery and the Novosibirsk State Art Museum, as well as from private collections in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
