Exhibition «Pavel Kuznetsov (1878–1968)»
Pavel Kuznetsov (1878–1968) is one of the most famous artists of the early 20th century. He was a student of Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin, and a prominent representative of the Blue Rose art association. His landscapes, subtle in colour and composition, take pride of place at permanent and temporary exhibitions in the largest national museums. Nevertheless, this is the first and only monographic exhibition in the Russian Museum for the last thirty years featuring the artist’s oeuvre most fully and diversely.
The Russian Museum has a comprehensive collection of the master’s works, reflecting different stages of his creative path.
The artistic heritage of Pavel Kuznetsov, dating back to the 1910s is highly valuable and unique. At that time, the artist made creative trips to the Trans-Volga steppes and Turkestan, familiarizing himself with the nature and life of the peoples of the East.
The exhibition, celebrating the 145th anniversary of the artist’s birth, presents well-known paintings of that period: Bird Seller (1912), Fortune-Telling (1912), Shearing Rams (1912), Oriental Motif (1912–1913), Rain in the Steppe (1912) and others.
In Soviet days, Pavel Kuznetsov created many works on the themes of the new collective farm and industrial construction. The paintings are consonant with the period – optimistic, bright and full of the joy of creation. The Russian Museum owns a large number of works by the master, acquired in 1974 from the artist’s niece. Among them are large-format compositions Grape Harvesting (1928), Crimean Collective Farm (1928), Peasant Women (1926), Construction in Armenia (1931) and The Rest of Shepherds (1926) revealing the artist’s stylistics of the Soviet period.
Kuznetsov’s still lifes of different years occupy a special and peculiar place in his artistic heritage. The exhibition includes such well-known works of this genre as Still Life with Crystal (circa 1919) and Still Life with a Tray (1916). His still lifes of the 1930s and 1940s are characterized by light backgrounds and optimistic mood.
The exhibition presents paintings and graphic works by Pavel Kuznetsov from the Russian Museum and private collections.
