Historical photographs preserve evidence of the Russian Museum’s first decades: its founding, the formation of its collections, the conversion of the Mikhailovsky Palace for museum use, and its first exhibitions.
From the museum’s earliest years, photography became an important tool for documentation: works of art, museum galleries, and events connected with the museum’s activities were photographed. These photographs allow us to see the museum’s history not only through documents and dates, but also through images that have survived. They show how the Russian Museum came into being, where its first collections came from, what visitors saw when it opened in 1898, and how the museum environment familiar to us today took shape.

The State Russian Museum is a unique museum complex in the centre of St. Petersburg. It represents not only the richest collection of the national fine arts but also tells about three centuries of Russian architecture and garden art. Today it includes ensembles of the Mikhailovsky Palace, St. Michael's Castle, the Marble and the Stroganov Palaces, the Summer Garden and the Mikhailovsky Garden, the Summer Palace and the Cabin of Peter the Great.

In 1994 famous German collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig gifted their collection of art of the second half of the XX-th century to the State Russian musuem. This gift resulted in a special part of the permanent exhibition «The Ludwig Museum at the Russian Museum» which hosted its first visitors on the 20 March, 1995 at the Marble Palace.
