Sarafan

Late 18th 19th century

Shirt
Canvas

This red sarafan is unique for its archaic tailoring: three straight cloth pieces are connected at the back at shoulder-blade level, where the tapered gores are inserted into seams, six on each side. The sarafan’s skirt forms an almost complete circle. The garment is girdled high, just under the breast, its folds forming a surprisingly beautiful silhouette. The gold silk ribbon decor along the hem, front closure and armholes makes the sarafan resemble the Byzantine garments of mosaics and book miniatures.
