Alternating delicate lace edges and bright worsted cloth braids are only seen on the hems of shirts and skirts in the Kadnikov District, Vologda Gubernia in the 19th century. Until the 1880s the ancient ritual of perebaska was preserved here: after the wedding the young bride put on up to 17 shirts or skirts at the same time to show off her finery (Davydova 1892, 121).
