A shushpan is age-old peasant clothing in the form of a loose-fitting kaftan, worn by both men and women. The shushpan was found in a number of central and southern Russian gubernias but shushpan in the Sapozhok District of Ryazan Gubernia had unusual embellishments such as wide, brightly colored, patterned woven panels. The shushpan itself was sewn out of white woolen cloth.
Female costume in the Sapozhok District was of a very particular character. An unusual contrast was created by the dark red shirt, apron with vivid black and white patterns and snow-white split shushpan with a red and brown border along the hem and sleeves. The patterns on the woven inset are masterly. It is as if they are inscribed one inside the other and several combinations of rhombuses are repeated. Criss-crossing ridged motifs, which seem to echo the white tone of the fabric, are positioned alongside them.
