Navershnik (outer tunic)

Ryazan Gubernia. 19th century

Female costume in Tula and Ryazan gubernias was unusual due to its color and variety of embellishments. They were placed on the shirt, ponyova and often on the apron. Loose-fitting, straight navershniks, flared with contrasting side insets, and golopuziks add fullness and elegance to the female figure. The thick, heavy ponyova, striking apron and bottom edge of the shirt form a complicated, multi-layered dress with a staggered pattern of colored horizontal stripes.
