By 1848 as many as 500 Torzhok seamstresses were employed in the decorative sewing of shoes and boots. Footwear for townspeople was sewn from thin, colored goatskin and adorned with gold embroidery (Tverskie Vedomosti № 13 (1850), 34–36).
