Many costumes in Russia’s gubernias were embellished with striped neck chains, strung with colored beads. The chains were either worn individually or all together at the same time. The sequence of colors was very significant: repeating a color every one, two or three beads significantly changes the overall look of the item.

Round beaded ropes (“zhguty”) were worn along with the chains. Interweaving stripes were the simplest design.
