High Boots

Arzamaz, Nizhny Novgorod Gubernia. Latter half of the 19th century

Velvet shoes, embroidered with gold and colorful knitted woolen boots, with leather or felt soles, decorated with bright stripes and flower patterns were carried in boxes to be worn as “indoor” shoes when visiting. The knitted patterns and cross stitches — cheerful colorful stripes, miniature silver chains and bouquets of flowers — might seem out of place as shoe decorations. Nevertheless, they went perfectly with the bright silks and brocade and the effect of the gold embroidery on the local costume.
