Rare for the Russian art of the first half of the 19th century, this is a many-figured portrait that is a genre painting at the same time. Depicted are artists and writers, the close friends of the artist: the artists Grigory Chernetsov (1802–1865; at the samovar), his brother Nikanor Chernetsov (1805– 1879; with a pipe), Valerian Langer (1800?–1865?; with a glass), as well as the writer, journalist, and collector Pavel Svinin (1787–1839; with a book).
