Aivazovsky often painted nocturnal views in the late 1840s. This particular work appears to depict the Black Sea coast near Theodosia. The artist s masterful ability to convey the effects of the moonlight on the clouds and its pastose path on the water delighted the art critics and visitors who flocked to his exhibitions at the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, Theodosia, Odessa and Moscow.
