The painting was done by the artist on order of Grand Duke Alexander Nikolaevich. The artist de¬picted the Via del Corso, one of the most famous old streets of Rome, on which the major carnival parades usually took place. Among those present (on the balcony) are Russian artists who were in Rome at the time. It is a bright, cheerful spectacle in which many people are participating. In essence, it is a genre painting with many figures, of which there were few in Russia at the time.
