From time immemorial, the banya (Russian bath-house) has occupied a special place in the life of Russians. Ablution in hot and then cold water as well as the steaming process turned this procedure into a unique ritual. Russian baths made a particularly strong impression on foreigners. The citizens of Moscow largely followed a traditional life style at the end of the eighteenth century. The Serebrenichesky Bath-Houses, which stood on the banks of the river Yauza, famed for its particularly clean water at that time, were very popular among the city's population.
