This painting, among others, was commissioned by Catherine II and donated to the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg in 1794.

The Battle on the Ice of Chudskoye Lake against German crusaders, which took place on 15^th of April 1242 (Ice Battle), was a complete victory for the Russian troops led by Alexander Nevsky.
