This painting depicts the future Emperor Alexander I (1777–1825), who was the eldest son of Paul I and Empress Maria Feodorovna. Alexander was brought up by his grandmother, Catherine the Great, in the spirit of the Enlightenment. The Grand Duke is painted with the orders of St. Andrew (the ribbon and the star) and St Anna (the cross).
