Vasily Vereshchagin, who was fascinated by the Old Russian world, gathered a unique collection of objects and costumes of the rural life and studied the Old Russian architecture. The drawings that he made in1887-1888, were the result of his trips to Rostov, Kostroma and Yaroslavl and reveal the skill of the artist, his understanding of Russian nature and architecture. The Church of St. John the Evangelist was built in 1687 by Archimandrite Gerasim in commemoration of the appearance of St. John the Evangelist to Abraham of Rostov. Judging by its general aspect, this church belongs to the type of tiered churches of the 17th century. The low, semi-dark gallery contrasts sharply with the high, light-filled space of the temple and the refectory. This feeling is aroused by the iconostasis of the master Isaiah and by the Holy gates carved with plated-gold.

The drawing in this delicate study combines with the multicoloured palette, the icons, their golden and silver covers and candelabra shine in the twilight of the church.

Vereshchagin created the image of the past, in which one can feel the artist's delight for the beauty produced by the hands of a Russian man.
