Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna (1783–1801) was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Paul Petrovich (Paul I) and Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna. She married Archduke Joseph of Austria in 1799. The painting depicts her with a miniature portrait of Catherine the Great encrusted with diamonds and the Order of St. Catherine (star) on her chest. There is another adaptation of this portrait painted in 1796 at the Gatchina Palace (The State Estate Museum “Gatchina”).
