In 1861, Myasoyedov married Yelizaveta Krivtsova, the daughter of a landowner. This event had some bearing on the creation of this painting. He based the young lady in the painting on his own bride, and gives the work an atmosphere of love and romance. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. St-Petersburg. 1999. P. 116.
