The kokoshnik was one of the most common types of Russian headdress. In much of Russia’s European territory it was worn by both peasant women and merchant and bourgeoisie townswomen. There were many varieties of kokoshnik: the cylindrical flat-topped kikas, flat blade-shapes, pointed tops and round kokoshniks, shimmering with golden and pearl threads; delicate podniz (netting) hang down over the forehead.
