The Old Believer women wore large square kerchiefs which were covered in embroidery and worn in a way style variously as v rospusk, na raspustikhu or na rastoto (Klimova 1983, 69), meaning “let down”: a strip of galloon, stitched to the middle of one of the sides, was worn low on the forehead. The headscarf covered its wearer head like heavy, valuable vestments. Not all women could afford such expensive gold-embroidered headscarves, even if they came from wealthy families.
