The Russian Museum’s Department of Contemporary Trends was established in the late 1980s to collect and present contemporary art and new forms of artistic practice. Its holdings include installations, assemblages, video art, photography, photo-based works, and other media that fall outside traditional museum categories.
The collection has developed in close connection with the museum’s exhibition programme, and many works have entered the collection after being shown in exhibitions at the museum. The department also acquires works by earlier artists and movements that, for various reasons, were long underrepresented in museum collections. In this way, the collection not only reflects current developments in contemporary art but also helps address gaps in the history of art in the second half of the twentieth century.
