Exhibition «Karl the Great. 225th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth»

The anniversary exhibition of the ‘Great Carl’ shows about 160 paintings and 200–250 watercolours and drawings by the artist. The main and best-known Brullov’s work — the grand painting The Last Day of Pompeii (1833) — is a gem of the collection of the State Russian Museum. This year it underwent a comprehensive restoration to become a key exhibit at the monographic exhibition. Nevertheless, “Karl the Great” definitely cannot be called a master of one painting, since he created a variety of portraits, genre paintings, and works on historical and religious subjects.

The exhibition “He Conquered Both Time and Space...” is timed to the 225th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin’s birth. The museum rich depositories enable to characterize the oeuvre of the great writer most fully and diversely and to reconstruct the cultural and historical background, which witnessed the formation and heyday of Pushkin’s unique talent. The show is dedicated to the poet’s characters, contemporaries and descendants.

Exhibition «For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries»

The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents. The exhibition shows more than 200 works of painting, numismatics, graphic, decorative and applied arts from the collection of the Russian Museum. Portraits of merchants are presented in all their diversity.

The Art of the Belskys

Belsky brothers (Ivan (1719-1799), Alexey (1729-1796) and Efim (1730-1778)) were the greatest masters of the painting team of The Chancellery (later The Office) of buildings of Her Imperial Majesty. For more than half a century they performed the most responsible painting work commissioned by Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great.

In the works presented at the exhibition one can always feel the romantic theatrical vision of the master, which allows to discuss the special Tyshler's artistry, a specific refraction of the revolution's mythology.

Valaam: 200 years in Russian Painting

The exhibition for the first time unites the valuable collection of paintings of the New Valaam Monastery (Finland) and works from the Valaam Monastery (Russia). Works on Valaam theme from the State Russian Museum and private collections are also part of the exhibit of more than 70 works.

“Expressionism in Russian Art” continues an ongoing exhibition project on the major styles and movements in Russian art of the 20th century. The exhibition consists of around 350 works created between the 1900s and the mid-1930s.

Vladimir Konashevich

V. M. Konashevich’s oeuvre is familiar to many people all over Russia and the post-Soviet space since their childhood. It was his illustrations that young readers could see in the books by Hans Christian Andersen and Alexander Pushkin, as well as by outstanding Soviet writers, such as Kornei Chukovsky, Samuil Marshak, and Yuri Olesha.

Nikolai Kulbin

The first retrospective exhibition of works by Kulbin discovers the artist as a landscape painter with an analytical mind and yet an unspoiled vision, a prominent graphic artist who left many portraits of his contemporaries (D. Burliuk, M. Kuzmin, S. Sudeikin, A. Kuprin, V. Khlebnikov, etc.), a talented theatrical artist and book illustrator. The exhibition shows almost 120 works, including a futurist book “Vzorval” by A. Kruchenykh illustrated by Nikolai Kulbin.

St. Isaac's Cathedral. To the History of Construction

The exhibition at the Benois Wing makes it possible to see the breathtaking project of St. Isaac’s Cathedral as it was conceived, although never realized and presents these rare large-scale works, along with many drawings, sketches, and cartoons by K. P. Bryullov, F. A. Bruni, P. V. Basin, and a variety of sculptures, including those on religious subjects and sculptural portraits of the great artists who contributed to the interior décor of St. Isaac’s Cathedral.

Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. On the 140th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The exhibition will include over 250 works of painting and graphic art from the collection of the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, Radishchev State Art Museum in Saratov and other museums.

Sport in Soviet Porcelain, Graphic Arts, and Sculpture

The exhibition includes around 350 ceramic works (porcelain, faience, maiolica) made in the Soviet Union and Russia between the 1920s and the early 1990s, from the collections of the Russian Museum, State Hermitage, and private collections.

The exhibition consisting of over 500 objects from the collection of the Russian Museum amasses impressive handiwork by artisans of the Nizhny Novgorod Region which has never been displayed before in such a comprehensive way.

Exhibition "Henryk Siemiradzki and Russian Artists’ Colony in Rome"

The exhibition unites, for the first time, 125 artworks by Siemiradzki and his contemporaries, Russian academic painters and sculptors, who worked in the Eternal City in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. Among them are Mark Antokolsky, Stepan Bakalovich, Vladimir Beklemishev, Mikhail Botkin, Fyodor Bronnikov, Nikolai Laveretsky, Alexander Rizzoni, Alexander and Pavel Svedomsky, Vassily Smirnov, and Pavel Chistyakov.

Artemy Ober. 1843–1917. To the 100th Anniversary of His Death

The first monographic exhibition of one of the major Russian sculptors of animals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Artemy Ober, presents a comprehensive collection of his works, acquired by the Russian Museum from his widow.

Exhibition "Moscow during the Reigns of Catherine II and Paul I in the Paintings of Gérard de la Barthe"

The exhibition at the St Michael's Castle includes 15 paintings from the Moscow series by Gérard de la Barthe, accessioned into the Museum's collection in 1931 from the Alexandrovsky Palace in Tsarskoye Selo and never yet exhibited in its entirety. The display also includes views of Moscow painted around the same time by I. V. Moshkov (1778–1845) and etchings depicting the 1812 Fire of Moscow, the landscape backgrounds of which are based on de la Barthe's vedute.

Andrei Tarkovsky. An Artist of Space

The exhibition is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the famous Russian filmmaker and film director. The exhibition in the Russian Museum will bring together archival and documentary materials, as well as works of art by the artists and photographers who were Tarkovsky’s colleagues, friends, and followers.

Dreams of Universal Flowering

The exhibition features a complicated and many-sided picture of the first decades of the 20th century comprising revolutionary unrest of the 1905th as well as the enthusiasm of the first five-year plan when the belief in the World Revolution, hopes for the common prosperity, apprehensions and brave dreams were combined.

Exhibition "Posters of the Revolutionary Era"

The exhibition comprises over 100 art pieces on different subjects – from political propaganda to education, including the world-famous works by such masters as V.Lebedev, V.Kozlinsky, D.Moor, N.Kogout, V.Mayakovsky, V.Deni, and others, along with the posters by unknown artists.

Children of the Soviet Union. An exhibition

The exhibition celebrates the 100-th Anniversary of the October Revolution and comprises works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, applied art and numismatics created in 1920-1980s and devoted to the theme of childhood. The exhibition "Children of the Soviet Union" will be opened in the Marble Palace on the 7th of September 2017.

Exhibition "Art into Life. 1918-1925"

The exhibition presents the propaganda art of the first years after the 1917 Revolution. The core part of the exhibition is the production of the Decorative Institute which functioned in Petrograd-Leningrad in 1918-1926.

Exhibition "Arkady Rylov. 1870-1939"

The Russian Museum houses the biggest part of Rylov’s artistic heritage: paintings and sketches of various periods, graphic works, illustrations. 100 art pieces are on display, among which are landscapes and historical and genre paintings from the collection of the Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, and other museums.

Artists of the Society of Russian Sculptors

Exhibition includes about 60 sculptures of different artists of the Society of Russian Sculptors, one of the leading creative associations of the 1920-s in Soviet Russia.

The Art of Novgorod the Great in the Time of Prelate Macarius

The exhibition comprises a large number of real masterpieces of Old Russian art appeared at that time – icons, handwritten books, carving on wood, embroidery, liturgical objects, castings. The exhibition demonstrates one of the most significant art objects of Novgorod dating back from the 16th century – the carved gilded Ambon from St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod created on the initiative of archbishop Macarius in 1533.

Vasily Vereshchagin. To the 175th Anniversary of the Artist

The exhibition is dedicated to the 175-th anniversary of Vasily Vereshchagin, world-known Russian artist. The exhibition will comprise over 150 works from the collection of the Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery and other museums of Russia.

Georgy Vereisky

The exhibition is aimed to widely and fully present the artistic heritage of Georgy Vereisky (1886-1962) for the first time. Vereisky was one of the classics of the Soviet graphic school, which continued the traditions of “World of art” (“Mir iskusstva”) society, author of the remarkable portraits of the Russian artists.

Victor Borisov-Musatov and the “Blue Rose” Society

The art of Victor Borisov-Musatov (1870-1905), one of the leading masters of Russian symbolism, is presented in St.Michael’s Castle in context of his activity in the artistic society “Blue Rose”, the first exhibition of which dates back to 1907, 110 years ago.

The Masterpieces of Old Russian Icons. An Exhibition in Madrid (Spain)

Ivan Aivazovsky. To the 200th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth. An Exhibition

The exhibition includes about 200 pieces and a special part of it will present memorial materials, as well as photographic ones, which could show the iconography of Aivazovsky. The core part of the exposition includes world-renown masterpieces as well as less known works of Aivazovsky from the private collections.

Exhibition «Georg Christoph Grooth and the Time of Elizaveta Petrovna»

The third exhibition from the «Saga of the Dynasty» series dedicated to the reign of Elizabeth (Elizaveta Petrovna) was open in St.Michael’s Castle. The basis of the exhibition consists of works by Georg Christoph Grooth (1716-1749) - one of the most prominent representatives of «Rossica» whose 300th Anniversary is celebrated in 2016.

Paolo Troubetzkoy. To the 150th Anniversary

The exhibition includes 37 sculptures and 8 drawings from the collection of the State Russian Museum, State Hermitage Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music and private collection from Moscow.

Wassily Kandinsky and Russia

The oeuvre of Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), world-renown Russian artist is for the first time presented with special emphasis made on the national origins of his early figurative works and abstract paintings of 1910-s.

Apartment no. 5. To the History of the Petrograd Avant-Garde. 1915-1925

The exhibition familiarizes the public with a significant episode in the history of the Russian avant-garde and artistic life of Petrograd during World War I and first post-revolutionary years.

Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Artist and Art Collector

August 25 in the St. Michael's Castle opens the exhibition of Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, whose artworks reflects the revival and flourishing of etching in the early 20th century Russian art.

Sylvester Schedrin and School of Posillipo. To the 225th Anniversary of the Artist

The exhibition comprises around 100 pieces of art by Schedrin and painters of Posillipo School from the Russian Museum and other museum collections.

My Own Self. Self-Portrait in the Russian Museum

The exhibition comprises over 200 pieces of art from the Russian museum collection among which are the best examples of the genre performed by the leading masters of Russian art. 

Exhibition "Stepan Erzia. 1876-1959"

The Russian Museum possesses the largest and fullest collection of Erzia's works, donated by the author to the state. The exhibition in St Michael's Castle comprises 31 works from the Russian Museum and 6 sculptures from Mordovian Republican Fine Arts Museum in Saransk.

Petrov-Vodkin's circle

The exhibition presents the oeuvre of Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin and works by his contemporaries, pupils and associates.

Circus An Exhibition in the Benois Wing 17th March - 9th June

The bright and vivid world of the circus found its reflection in the works of many artists. The major exhibition of the Russian Museum presents the works of art of the 19th - 20th centuries dedicated to the circus for the first time.

Léon Bakst. 1866-1924 Exhibition in the Benois Wing 24th February 2016 – 31th May 2016

From 24^th February through May 2016 one can see the most large-scale exhibition of Léon Bakst in four rooms of the Benois wing. 

Peter the Great. His Time and Circle St. Michael’s Castle

The exhibition of the Saga of the Dynasty series from museum and private collections is devoted to the epoch of Peter the Great represented in art by contemporaries of the period. 

Treasures of Ancient Russia from the Russian Museum Collection St. Michael’s Castle

The exhibition presents over 400 unique items of  gold and silver jewellery dated to the 11^th – 13^th  centuries from eleven treasures that were hidden mostly in 1237-1240, in the period when Mongol-Tatar armies attacked Russian towns.
